The Catholic Church has a new Pope. He is Argentine Cardinal 76-year-old Jorge Bergoglia – First Pontiff from Americas. He is first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope Francis. He is the Argentine-born son of an Italian railway worker. Seen as a compassionate conservative, he reportedly came in second during the 2005 balloting that ultimately elected Benedict XVI. He prizes simplicity and humility and would encourage priests to do shoe-leather evangelization, his biographer says.
