Muskingum University is adding a new University Center to campus and construction starts next month.

On Wednesday, Muskingum University President Dr. Anne Steele announced that the University Center, which is the new home of the university’s library and teacher preparation program, will be a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility built around the university’s former library. Recycling the building is expected to save between $8 and $10 million.

"This is our first time to do reuse," said Dr. Steele. "I’m very excited about it. I think it’s very responsible from an environmental sustain ability perspective and it’s very responsible from a financial perspective and we’ll have a very exciting building when we finish."

Steele said the new library is years in the making and will be built to meet the need of "today’s" students. It will include a cafe and lounge, classrooms and plenty of study rooms for student, as Steel says it will be "the primary academic center of the university."

"And will be sort of the completion of what we call the ‘arrival plaza,’ which is made up of Montgomery Hall, Phillip and Betsy Caldwell Hall and the new University Center."

The total cost of the University Center is $10.5 million and construction is expected to be completed by the 2015-2016 school year.
