The Artist Colony’s featured artist of the month for February brings a different kind of art to the community.
The Pyrotechnika Fire and Light Performance Group uses black lights, fire dancers and many more types of performances in its displays. Founder, Stoey Stout, said he brought this art form back with him after a trip to the Middle East. Each summer Pyrotechnika performs a show for the residents at Zandex Health Care.
"For our nursing home folks, it was like going to Las Vegas," Stout said. "The residents love it. The fire, especially reaches them on a deep level. People who have Alzheimer’s they may forget what they had for breakfast this morning, but a week later, they still remember that the fire dancers were there."
It’s an art form unlike many others. People join and leave the group. Stout said they usually range from 15 to 20 members. One of the current members, Tyson Kumorowski, explains how it inspires.
"I think one of the benefits of our group is that we are very creative," Kumorowski said. "We tend to innovate especially for this area. We’re always providing opportunities for people to grow and learn in different art forms."
Pyrotechnika’s work is being featured this month. During the first Friday art walk this week the group will perform from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. On the top floor of the Masonic Temple Building.
