Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural hazards. Some floods develop over a couple of days, but flooding can happen in a relatively short period of time. Flash floods can results in raging waters in just a few minutes. They can carry a deadly cargo of rocks, mud and other debris so do not underestimate it's power. Since there are torrential rains moving into our area, there are some things that you need to do to ensure your safety.1)Listen to your radio or tv for local information, 2)Be aware of your surrounding that are known to easily flood, 3)If local authorities issue a flood watch, prepare to evacuate, 4)Secure your home and move essential items to the top floors, 5)If instructed, turn off your utilities at the main switch, 6)Fill you car with gas, 7)Fill your bathtub with water in case water becomes contaminate or services are cut off, 8)Do not walk through moving water and 9)Do not drive through flooded area. You can reduce the impact of flooding and sometimes avoid the danger altogether just by knowing how to respond.
