Recent legislation regarding school funding has Ohio state government hoping that school funding will be improved, but some school officials aren't so sure. Parity aid, a sum of money that is given to schools considered in need, is the latest of the attempts legislators have made to even out funding for public schools. Most schools in our area received some money, although some superintendents wonder if it will help.
"The legislators are making an effort, however in Maysville's situation what’s happening is that we have our current equity fund, which is being phased out, that started out several years ago in combination with the parity aid. What its doing is just that the parity aid is going to replace the equity aid, so if you look at it from that point of view, we're getting the same dollars in the combination of equity aid and parity aid this year as we did in 1999 with just the equity aid. So I see it as just a shift in aid from it has a different name now," said Hank Gavarkavich, superintendent of Maysville Local School District.
The fact that parity aid doesn't add much new money is not the only problem it has presented, the new parity aid also has stipulations regarding where the money can be spent. The stipulations state that money can be used for textbooks, lowering class sizes, and providing all day every day kindergartens. Officials say that more flexibility may be necessary to provide the type of education individual districts need.
