It is the 17th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Wednesday night the survivors and patients were invited to attend a seminar at the Inn at EagleSticks. Special speaker, Dr. William Farrar of the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, spoke to survivors and patients who were in attendance. Prevention consists of awareness, the importance of self-breast exams, clinical exams, and mammograms as well. Also new drugs, more innovative mammogram equipment and surgeries are on the forefront of fighting breast cancer. Support groups are also playing a large role in the treatment aspect of this disease. Michele Hankinson of the Genesis HealthSource, was also recognized at the seminar for her extensive work with forming and managing the support groups around the area. Today she received the Janet Voinovich Service Award of Ohio for her efforts with the awareness of breast cancer. Since today is Ohio Mammography Day everyone is encouraged to “think pink” by wearing pink clothing or ribbons as a reminder for women to get their mammograms and breast exams.
