Muskingum County Sheriff Bob Stephenson is speaking out about the shooting death of one of his men. On Tuesday January 8th deputy Bob Tanner Jr. ws shot to death during a traffic stop in falls township. Sheriff Stephenson says it was a horrific event. He says his first thought was to get to the office to oversee the department reaction. But he also knew he would be needed at the hospital. He says he wanted to make sure his deputy was getting the best possible care. The Sheriff also said he wanted to support the injured officer's wife. The deputy died at Good Samaritan Hospital that same night.
The Sheriff says his next concern was his officers chasing the suspect or suspects. He says he worried about another deputy getting hurt. The suspect was arrested with no problems. One other issue the Sheriff addressed...the criticism that he got for not speaking out earlier. He said that after a speech he made in September in downtown Zanesville at a rally to raise support after the terrorist attacks...he was criticized for his remarks. He says now he thinks twice before he addresses the public. But he made it clear he is proud of his officers and support staff...and he would also like to thank the community for its support during his department's difficult times.
