John W. Byrd Junior has been executed by injection. The 38-year-old Byrd was pronounced dead at 10:09 this morning (Tuesday) at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. He had been sentenced to death for the 1983 murder of Cincinnati convenience store clerk Monte Tewksbury. Byrd said he was innocent. An accomplice, John Brewer, addmitted stabbing Tewksbury but prosecutors said he already was serving a life sentence and was lying to protect Byrd. Byrd's actual innocence was denied by the courts. He was executed just feet away from Ohio's electric chair.
