There is currently a nationwide shortage of volunteer fire fighters and little by little volunteer fire departments across the map are fading away, thankfully in this area one volunteer fire department is holding strong. They want to continue to do so by recruiting young people to join the department. Volunteers were at Maysville High School spreading the word about fire fighting and helping others in the community. The Newton Township Volunteer Fire Department has grown over the years and is one of the biggest in Ohio. It has attracted many young men and women to be a part of the department. Students who are between 14 and 17 years old can get involved in the Explore A Post Program and then at the age of 18 they can become a member of the department. If anyone is interested in getting involved in the Explore A Post Program with the Boy Scouts Of America, contact the local Zanesville Chapter of the Boy Scouts.
