Saturday afternoon an important piece of American history was recognized. The Gant House, once owned by freed slave Nelson T. Gant, was marked as part of the Underground Railroad. Mr. Gant had become a self-made millionare, but risked his money and life countless times to help other African American slaves find freedom. His home on West Main Street was a stopping point for many slaves heading north along the Muskingum River. The Friends of Freedom Society and Ohio Department of Transportation teamed up with the Gant Foundation to mark this house as the thirteenth in Ohio with Underground Railroad signifigance. The Gant Foundation is collecting donations to puchase the house to make it a cultural center for Zanesville.
