Governor Bob Taft has proposed a record 49-point-two billion dollar state budget for the next two years. Taft’s budget proposal today includes no spending increases for state agencies and decreases for others. But the budget still raises total spending by about five percent next year and about four percent the following year to pay for primary and secondary education and to address rising Medicaid costs. In prepared remarks, Taft said the tight budget posses a challenge for Ohio, but also gives the chance to focus on what he called “critical priorities.” The legislature must approve the budget by June 30th.
