Speaker Larry Householder says the legislature has just 16 days to plug a 720 million-dollar hole in the current state budget. Governor Taft – like Householder, a republican – says if lawmakers do not enact a package of tax increases by the end of February, he will be forced to make cuts to primary-secondary and higher education. But Householder says lawmakers must act by February 20th so the package can be put in place. He says both the house and the senate may consider separate parts of the legislation, then form a joint committee to work out differences.
