Passage of a levy enabled a Central Ohio school system to eliminate the “pay to play” fees it was charging. Don Thorp of Lakewood High School in Licking County says the fees cause hardship, hard feelings and all sorts of other difficulties for coaches, players and families. Lakewood Schools began charging participation fees for extracurricular activities in 2001 after six levy defeats since 1993. Voters earlier this month approved a 5.8 mill emergency operating levy, enabling the district to end the fees.
