By the end of the year, anyone in Ohio will be able to dial a toll-free number to relay information about a child abduction. The panel charged with fine-tuning Ohio’s Amber Alert System says the phone number, 1-877-AMBER-O-H, will be operational by December 31st. The hotline is a relatively easy and inexpensive step that can be taken immediately. The Amber Alert steering committee said setting up a statewide network of electronic highway signs to flash alerts to motorists may be another story. Committee members acknowledged that the high cost could mean a ten-year delay in the completion of the message board network. The panel also is considering a plan to disseminate child abduction alerts via supermarkets and other public places.
