Blankets are quickly vanishing off the shelves for the annual Good Samaritan Alumni Blanket Drive and they need the community's help.

The Good Samaritan Alumni Nurses Association is collecting blankets for the 12th annual blanket drive. Eastside Community Ministry then distributes them to area families.

During the past 11 years nurses from the alumni association have collected over 2,500 blankets and over $15,000 to help out area families during the cold winter months.

Unfortunately they're very short this year.

“We have so far collected 75 blankets and we are getting donations in but we really need more blankets so if the community has any blankets, anyone in the community, they can drop them off at Good Samaritan or Bethesda in the lobby,” said Barbara Mendelson, Good Samaritan Alumni Association.

Once again, many people are having difficulty paying their heating bills and Eastside Community Ministry is trying to keep up with the high demand for families needing blankets.

“Sometimes, we may get a family that will have nine in a family, so it doesn't take long for the blankets to get depleted when you're doing that many in a household and as it gets colder, it seems like there's a greater demand for those blankets,” said Mary Church, Clothing Bank Manager, Eastside Community Ministry.

New or gently used blankets can be dropped off at Genesis Good Samaritan or Bethesda from 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week until December 31st.
