Some local railroad fans have harbored their hard work into a truly special creation downtown.
The Zane Trace National Trail Model Railroad Club have built a specatular display in a loft above the Business Equipment Store on Market Street and Fourth. Club member Bill Lyon says the display is more realistic than most people think.
"Most of the equipment the boys run here is diesel. There are about four of us who are steam aficionados and we have a lot of fun running the steam engines here. Quite often we'll have one though we run with a built in sound system, but we had one here last Tuesday night with the sound system turned up so loud, in ho scale now, that we had to literally plug our ears!"
The display has grown steadily through the years , but Lyon says he hopes the models can grow into a new, larger building soon and explains one reason why.
"We hope someday to find a building with a first floor entrance. This third floor gets people, 37 steps, you have to be young like me! I'm only an 83-year old but I go up and down these steps like they were nothing but I know a lot of people just can't get up those stairs. We'd like to move down."
The club will be holding an open house on Saturday from noon to 5 pm and all are welcome to attend.
