Saving money and strengthening Muskingum County's infrastructure were the two topics for the County Engineer at a Commissioner meeting this morning.

County Engineer Doug Davis heard bids from companies that can help the county save money in the long run when it comes herbicides. "What we are trying to do is and ODOT has been using this process for a period of years. We're trying to do is piggyback what they're doing is to apply some applications of herbicide in areas to thin the grasses in areas, were not killing anything but to thin the grasses in areas also to aid in our mowing. It will take 2 mowing's year and cut those down to 1, or 3 mowing's cut down to 2, that frees up our labor and it saves diesel that need running our equipment and its less wear and tear on our equipment."

Muskingum County has over 400 bridges and they're getting old and weak. Bids for bridge culverts were listened to carefully to ensure public safety as well as strengthening local infrastructure. "If we can take what you and I would think of a metal beam or a concrete slab or a wooden deck bridge and we can replace that using the watershed calculations with that concrete box culvert, its going to last longer, has less affects of the roadway salts and materials we use for winterizing and it can be safer because we can build those a little wider and move our guardrail out."

Davis added it will be sometime until both project bids are decided upon.
