Red Light Cameras in Zanesville
The decision to install red light cameras in Zanesville has not been made, but Thursday afternoon city officials met with representatives from two camera system companies.

The systems catch traffic violators in action, with technology placed at accident prone streets that will take pictures and video as violations occur.

Both Redflex and Gatso representatives say their camera systems reduce accidents, but some argue that drivers are just taking different routes, routes that do not have the equipment installed.

The city of Heath has seen a significant decrease in traffic violations, according to Redflex who supplies them. Redflex is the leading camera supplier in the US, operating in many Ohio cities including Columbus, Dayton and Toledo.

Gatso operates primarily outside the US, but does have camera equipment in several US cities including Cleveland.

"I'm still trying to discern what these two companies are saying. It's a fact finding mission, not only for me but for the committee. We're just trying to find out what these companies do offer us," said Robert Brandford Zanesville Public Safety Director.

If officials decide to install the cameras, it will not cost the city anything up front. Instead the camera company will receive a certain percentage of the revenue generated from citations, and the city will receive the remainder. In Heath, Redflex receives $32 out of a $100 fine. That number changes, depending on the services utilized. Brandford said, it's not about money,"When people are so negligent to go through an intersection with four cars, I think we have to be able to do something to try to deal with all this. You don't need to wait till you have a death before you do something."

At this time, city officials are not ready to make a decision on whether or not they'll install red light cameras in the Y-City. According to Brandford, the city will weigh public opinion before making a final decision.
