Commissioner Bates discuss Muskingum County finances

Fifth-Third securities representatives met with Muskingum County Commissioners today to discuss where Muskingum County is financially.

Commissioner John Bates says the county has faced the economic downturn very well and is doing much better than surrounding counties.

"We are at an A1 plus rating with the bond council which is very, very good.  We are very fortunate a lot of counties are not doing as well as we are, the bond council says we are weathering the story pretty good.  They came down today and had a talk with us and said our debt looks really good and we can borrow more money if we want it," says Muskingum County Commissioner John Bates.

An A1 rating is good and based upon employment numbers, outstanding debt, income levels and population. Commissioner Bates says even though the county is in debt, it is right where it should be.

"Well actually the debt stuff, yea we are always going to be in debt, but actually we could borrow a lot more money if we want to. We are very conservative, we are just borrowing money for the infrastructure right now like the water and sewer," tells Commissioner Bates.

Commissioner Bates says he wants to build infrastructure to help keep jobs, industries and young people in Zanesville.
