Donations for Asia Hatfield

The community is opening its heart to help one local teenager battle cancer.

Sunday is the big day for 15-year-old Asia Hatfield. She has battled large b-cell lymphoma since July and to assist with treatment costs, family and friends are putting on a huge benefit.  Even in these tough economic times, family members say the amount of donations they received is more than they ever expected.

"So many businesses and individuals who are struggling financially have just said without question what do you need what can we do for you and it has just been overwhelming," says a teary-eyed Janelle Peadon, a family friend.

Asia's father lost his job and the family has limited resources and insurance. Peadon says the benefit began as a small spaghetti dinner and grew as more people heard Asia's story. Peadon says people have donated more than 70 gift baskets which will be available through a silent auction. A 40 inch plasma tv, a week in Hilton Head, and a quarter horse donated by Beau Greiner's family will be auctioned off at 4:30 pm. There will also be more than 40 prom dresses available to buy. Those in attendance will be treated to a donation based ham or pizza dinner.

Asia's mother says the generosity shown by the community is more than they ever expected.

"This is not only a benefit to benefit Asia, but this a benefit to bring the community together to say yes one person can make a difference. Individuals collectively can make a very big difference and that is really the important message, not just lets do something good for this little girl and her family because her family has paid it forward to the community for so many years," says Peadon.

Peadon has no idea how much money the benefit will raise, but every dollar is helping Asia's road to recovery.

"She getting ready Monday, after the benefit, to have her last round of chemo and other than a few bumps in the road I think she is doing very well with it," says Peadon.

Asia Hatfield's benefit is Sunday from 11am-6pm at Roger's Auction Barn in Adamsville. Donations can also be made at any local Huntington Bank to the Asia Hatfield Fund.
