A puppy or kitten under the tree is always a Christmas favorite, but getting a pet is a commitment.
The Muskingum County Animal Shelter is filled with row after row of animals looking for homes. While pets are a popular gift for the holidays, some find themselves back in the shelter in the weeks after Christmas.
"We'll see a few come back, the biggest mistake I see people make is they come in and they have an idea of what they are looking for and that pet may not be here so they will select something else and those are the ones that are usually returned," says Larry Hostetler the Executive Director of the Animal Shelter.
Picking the right breed and type of pet for your lifestyle is very important so the staff at the animal shelter will help you select the perfect pet .
"So when somebody comes in and has a particular lifestyle or needs that they want out of an animal, our staff is pretty good about saying 'oh we have this dog back there that, that sounds like it will be a good fit for you'," tells Hostetler.
Also, before you purchase a pet keep in mind the long term costs.
"There is going to be veterinary care, feeding, grooming, toys, treats all that for the rest of the animals life. So that you need to take into consideration," says Hostetler.
For those who are ready to own a pet, Hostetler says a it will bring joy and unconditional love to your life.
"They are there to greet you when you come home, their there when your happy and they are always there for you if you are there for them," says Hostetler.
The animal shelter is offering gift certificates this season. So if you want to buy a pet for a friend, you can pay all the adoption costs and let your friend pick out their own pet.
