The cold weather and the high cost of gasoline is causing budget issues for the Muskingum County Engineer's office. Engineer Doug Davis spoke with Muskingum County Commissioners about his department's budget.

"So we were here to talk about budget with the Commissioners and we use that opportunity to look at trends where we think we're going to be in the future for 2010, 2011, and 2012. So we're now budgeting out that far ahead to look at capital improvements. So it's an idea and it's a time to get face to face with the Commissioners and let them know this is where we think our trends are. What are we going to do," Doug Davis, Muskingum County Engineer said.

Davis says they have major bridges that need to be replaced and roads that need resurfaced and they just don't have the money to do it. He says the cost of the materials like asphalt and stone has gone up and their revenue is stagnant.

"We now have traffic counts on all our roadways so we can tell where our traffic is. We basically we have to prioritize those. The heaviest traveled roads like North Pointe, with over 6,000 cars on it a day, what we're looking at is that road gets top priority for resurfacing there will be some other roads that may have to change here in the future from an asphalt road to a chip seal." Daivs said.

Davis says they want to maintain their level of service the best they can so to cut back they will spot and seal portions of roads instead of sealing the whole thing. Davis says one of the things the County Commissioners are considering doing is taking County General money and putting it into the engineers budget. He says no one wants there to be levy's with the economy the way it is right now.
