Avoiding Scams

Pictures and video of the devastation from Haiti are affecting each and every one of us.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says the outpouring of support and relief from the community has been overwhelming.

However, it is warning people to make sure you know where your money is going because there are some individuals out there trying to profit from this natural disaster.

"Look for a familiar face. If you don't know who's knocking on your door, making that phone call, or you're not familiar with the Website, just go with your gut instinct and don't do it, " says Keely Warden of the Red Cross.

Warden says she's not aware of any local scams yet, but she says that doesn't mean they aren't out there.

"If someone is fraudulent, using the Red Cross name or that logo, it is a federal felony, " says Warden.

If you have been scammed, make sure to contact your local law enforcement agency and the Muskingum Valley Red Cross to help others from becoming victims too.
