The use of pot is growing and you may be surprised on who is using it more often.
Most people think marijuana is predominately used among young people but now more senior citizens are using the drug.
As the baby boomer generation grows older so does the number of people age 50 and over smoking pot.
"The 60's flower children are senior citizens now or approaching their senior years and some of them didn't stop what they were doing they just slowed down. Some did stop but are returning to using because there is less stigma about marijuana now," the
Executive Director Muskingum Behavioral Health Steve Carrel said.
Carrel says they're doing something that makes them feel good. He says many people continue to drink alcohol from their teen years and some stop and pick it up later on. He says anything that makes you feel good can be addicting.
"Marijuana contains a chemical THC that you can become addicted to anything that makes you feel good consistently is potentially addictive and that type of addiction is psychological addiction. It impairs part of a persons life because it becomes central to their life. They have trouble stopping it or reducing their use," Carrel said.
Smoking marijuana is dangerous especially in older people because it increases your heart rate and anytime you have an increased heart rate you are more likely to be at risk of a heart attack. He says older people are already have a high risk of heart problems.
