Effects of Wine

There are many health remedies out there that claim to help both men and women extend their lives. Some remain suggestions but others have been proven to work, and medical experts say studies are showing drinking a glass of wine is effective.

"In some people, it's not everybody, that you can actually lower your cholesterol by drinking a glass of wine a day, " says Dr. Vicki Whitacre of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.

Lowering your cholesterol can also decrease your risk of heart disease.

Whitacre says you should consult with your doctor before committing to the wine regimen, and you should check in with your doctor throughout the process to keep track of your cholesterol level and to see if it's working.

"I think, particularly for people who don't tolerate some of the cholesterol medications, if they are able to tolerate drinking a glass of wine a day, usually in the evening before they go to bed, do that as a trial, " says Whitacre.

However, it's recommended that you only drink one six to eight ounce glass a night. Drinking a larger amount of wine or any other alcoholic beverage can lead to negative effects, such as liver failure, malnutrition, and high blood pressure.
