It's a team of 20, who are intent on saving lives. MedFlight 6 is based in Morgan County, and it's celebrating five years of operation.
MedFlight 6's first flight took off from the Morgan County Airport on April 13th, 2005.
"Since we've started, I believe we've made an impact on thousands of lives. We do several hundred runs a year, " says Base Director, Michael Perkins.
Transporting a patient by MedFlight can cut travel time in half when compared to an ambulance. That can mean the difference between life and death.
"Getting those patients to a level one trauma center to where they can get that definitive care, " says Perkins.
"It gives them better care, not that the hospitals around here aren't good because they are, but it's just about getting them to the appropriate facility quicker, " says Flight Nurse Kathy Montgomery.
MedFlight 6 has a smaller helicopter than the other eight located throughout the state of Ohio. So, the nurses on board try to stabilize a patient on the ground before going airborne.
"It's tough to do procedures in there. It's not impossible, but it's tough. So, we like to try to get the patient stabilized before we get them loaded, " says Montgomery.
But MedFlight can't make it to hospitals or the scenes of accidents all the time.
"If the weather is not safe for us to fly, we're not going to fly. We take the safety of the patient and the crew very seriously. Everybody goes home at the end of the shift, " says Montgomery.
MedFlight would then work with EMS and call in additional ground crews to make sure the patient gets the appropriate care he or she needs.
MedFlight, who's main hub is based in Columbus, is also celebrating another milestone Thursday. The company is celebrating its 15th birthday.
