The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of an afternoon crash in Muskingum County that killed 5 Ohioans.

It happened around 1 p.m. along Interstate 70, near mile marker 147, just outside of Zanesville.

Troopers say a Chevy Cavalier was traveling westbound when it went across the median and struck a van traveling eastbound head-on.

The driver of the Chevy Cavalier, 23-year-old Tiffany Irwin of Zanesville, her two children 7-month-old Eva Nessline and 3-year-old Dallas Wickham, her uncle 39-year-old Scott Skeens of Philo, and her mother 41-year-old Maria Barnhill of Columbus were all killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van, 39-year-old Anna Geist of Maryland, was taken to a local hospital before being transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. She is listed in serious condition. Her younger daughter was uninjured in the crash, but Sergeant Jeremy Mendenhall of the Zanesville Post says the girl was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus for precautionary reasons and observation.
