Aside from kitchen fires, another common cause of structure fires has to do with something that every household has. Extension chords, if not used properly can have devastating effects on a home.
"We see electrical fires generally being related to extension chords. That's the number one culprit," says Zanesville Fire Department Chief Dave Lacy.
Chief Lacy urges people not to use extension chords unless they are absolutely necessary, and if they are, you should know which type to use.
"If you absolutely have to use an extension chord for a heater for a cooling unit, whatever, you need to make sure that you've got one sized to handle the load that you're going to handle," says Chief Lacy.
Small extension chords, or zip chords, should only be used for small items like alarm clocks and small lamps.
