While family picnics may be at the top of your "to do" list for the holiday weekend, we can't forget about our four-legged friends.

If your pets aren't fond of thunderstorms, there's a good chance they won't like fireworks either. The Muskingum County Animal Shelter wants people to take proactive steps in preparing their animals.

"The Fourth of July holidays can always be a stressful time for your pets especially with my personal animals I have a couple that are afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks so people really should take precautions to be careful," says Larry Hostetler of the Animal Shelter.

Depending on your pet, you may have to take a trip to your veterinarian.

"Some pets it can be a matter of taking them in the house, keep them nice and calm, maybe turn on the radio, turn up the TV, but in other cases where it can be a little more severe, you may need to contact your veterinarian to maybe get a sedative, something maybe to calm the animal down," says Hostetler.

Hostetler wants to remind people to keep their animals well-hydrated in this hot weather.
