Saying Goodbye

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is losing a man who has continued to build up the organization over the past 15 years.

It was Dan Hartman's last day serving as Executive Director. He spent much of the morning packing his office before saying his goodbye's and turning in his keys.

"How do you say thank you to a community that's been so good? It's tough, but it's time. It's time to let somebody else pick up the ship and let it run...and somebody else to take care of the staff because they're good people here, " says Hartman.

It was an emotional time for Hartman and his staff, who are very close-knit.

"They're like family. It's hard to say because like family, we all had our fun. We all had our challenges, but whenever it hit the fan or there was another house, another family, it didn't make any difference if it was three in the morning or three in the afternoon. You go. You take care of folks. That's just what you do here, " says Hartman.

Hartman says he doesn't regret his decision to retire because he wants to spend more time with his family and to take his grandchildren fishing.

He says the search committee is actively pursuing someone to fill his position and has a number of candidates in mind. Until that time, Readiness and Development Director, Marlene Henderson, will fill in as Interim Director.
