The Eighth Annual Birthday celebration of Nelson T. Gant and fundraiser, took place today at the Zanesville Art Museum. Gant was a former slave and Conductor on the Underground Railroad.
The Nelson T. Gant Foundation also honored long time member, Wanda Bailey, for her contributions to the community; friends and family speak highly of her.
Treasurer of the Gant Foundation, Elizabeth Kurtis, said "Wanda has always been a person who loves to do art and belong to organizations and shes done very well at both of them, and she's a person that is willing to do anything for anybody at any time."
Bailey's daughters attended the event in honor of their mother.
"We feel very privilaged to say that it is our mother that is being recognized, she'll be 81 on her birthday, and just to be able to be a part of this, and being honored, it's a real honor to all of us," said Linda Mayle, one of Bailey's daughters.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to build a new wing at the Nelson T. Gant house on Main Street.
