Looking into Danger

A Zanesville man is asking that branches, bushes, and brush be cleared from a property on Deerborne Street so it doesn't block drivers' views of a railroad crossing.

It's a railroad crossing that doesn't have any crossbars or lights, only a sign.

"I'm very concerned because a friend of mine and I almost got run over here because you can't see the train coming. He did not get on the whistle, and he didn't miss us but 8 to 10 feet, " says concerned citizen Carl Jellison.

"If it's dangerous, I guess we'll have to take a look at it. We'll have to get the engineer involved because it isn't the county property, but if it's a dangerous intersection, we should take a look at it, " says Muskingum County Commissioner, John Bates.

But so far nothing has been done.

Jellison says he's also concerned about the number of train cars going through the area. He says there have been a few incidents of these cars going off the track, and it has taken a few days to get the cars removed. Luckily, the cars only blocked off one of the roadways residents in that area use to get to and from their homes, but Jellison is worried about the day when both roadways are blocked.

"If that happens, we're totally isolated up on the hill. We cannot get in and out. There is some elderly and very sick people up there, " says Jellison.

Jellison says he's spoken with the train company on the matter, but he hasn't gotten an answer back.
