The city of Zanesville feels properly disposing of hazardous wastes is very important.

The Muskingum County and Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District teamed up to host a Household Hazardouse Waste Collection Day at Zane State Campus. Volunteers from Genesis Healthcare System were also there to collect any prescription medications.

"Well mainly more than anything is if they get into the wrong hands of folks, one of the biggest problems we have today with drug abuse is with prescription drugs," said Pete Hamilton, Director of Pharmacy for the Genesis Healthcare System.

Hamilton says throwing medication into the trash isn't enough.

"The biggest areas of drug abuse have to do with prescription drug abuse, this were at least getting things that have no more benefit off the street," he said.

Although prescription pills are not recycable, nearly half of all other items collected are.
