According to an American Electric Power Company spokeswoman about 36,000 customers statewide are experiencing a power outage.
In Muskingum County it is affecting more than 8,500 customers.
The outage forced the early closure of some city offices in downtown Zanesville. Traffic signals are also out in parts of downtown.
The spokeswoman says they are experiencing a transmission problem due to storms that went through the state earlier Wednesday. She says the are currently trying to assess what is causing the transmission failure and what corrective action needs to be taken. There is no timeline of when power may be restored.
The South Central Power Company is also reporting outages. More than 2,000 of their customers in Perry County are without power.
