One local volunteer fire department may be shutting down.
The Frazeysburg Volunteer Fire Department is encountering severe budget issues due to a clerical error by the village. The Ohio Revised Code changed the deadline for levy submissions which went unnoticed by local officials. It's now leaving the fire department to suffer financially.
"After talking to the county auditors office, we're not going to receive any funds, even if they pass it in a special election in February until 2012," said Treasurer of the Fire Department Jeff Curtis.
As a volunteer fire department, the station relies solely on tax payer's dollars. He says running a fire department is not cheap; they are going to lose 50% of their operating budget.
"One of the things that we're going to have to cut for next year as far as keeping the doors open and going forward, bringing on new members, we're not going to be able to train them the way that we have, our training budget for next year has already been slashed," said the treasurer.
Curtis says they are now unable to afford new equipment and will have to make do with what they have. The village is working on alternative plans to help out the department, but at this time no solution has been determined.
