Guns and Hoses

Area emergency responders are brushing up on their football skills and getting set to take the field in this year's Guns and Hoses Flag Football Game.

The firefighters practiced their play calling Sunday afternoon. They've lost the last two matches and really want to take home the trophy this year.

"We take this real serious. It's time for the hoses to step up to the plate," said Trevor Meek of the Zanesville Fire Department. "We'll make some changes this year. There's a lot of talk around the firehouse and drawing out some new plays, trying to come up with some different things to come at them this year."

In their way is the guns led by Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz, who said practice will prepare the guns for another run at the title.

"We practice a couple times a week and try to get the guys to one of those practices. We continue to do the things we've done the last couple of years," said Lutz speaking on his team's strategy. "The biggest thing is getting our legs under us and getting some exercise."

Though the two sides are battling on the field. They do so for a good cause. Money raised by the event goes to the Red Cross. Last year they raised $3,000 for the organization.

"They are out there behind the scenes helping. This is just a really good way of giving back to them because they're one organization that whenever they are called upon they never turn you down," said Event Organizer Jenifer Kruzan. "They're always in need of assistance."

The game takes place October 9 under the lights at Maysville High School's football field. Admission is $2.00 a person or $5.00 a family. Tickets can be purchased at businesses on the Maysville Pike.

Cheerleaders will be on hand as well and organizers are still looking for a marching band to help entertain the crowd.

If you have any questions about the event or would like to be involved call Jenifer Kruzan at (740) 408-3700.
