The New Lexington Fire Department is opening its doors to the public.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Saturday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the new station and municipal building. Government officials agree that the old station, built in 1887, was no longer functional for the firefighters.

"We were having problems just with people doing general business without the handicap accessibility, so now we meet all the requirements," said Mayor of New Lexington Janine Conrad.

Because the fire department is volunteer, they didn't have the necessary funds for the project, which ended up costing about one million dollars to complete. A collabrative effort on behalf of the city and state made the new facility possible and will have multiple uses.

"We are going to be using the fire station as a training station in a joint use agreement with Hocking College," said the mayor.

Officials say the new facility will allow for easier access to Main Street and a faster response time.
