Rail Options

The Muskingum County Port Authority discusses option for rail at the Eastpointe Business Park.

Four options are up for consideration. The first would put nearly two miles of rail to the Job Ready Site.  The Port Authority would also receive $800,000 in grant money to help fund the cost estimated at $3.2 million.

"We have a rough time line but we may be talking about late winter early spring. I hate to say when it will exactly be," said Executive Director of the Port Authority Mike Jacoby.

Options B and C would allow for the building of the rail in phases but with these option the port would have to turn down the grant money. The Board expressed some concern that it may be more difficult to find contractors willing to bid.

"I think there are contractors hungry for work right now so I think we will get interested bidders. We are presenting what is probably a more challenging bid packet," explained Jacoby. "It will probably require more work than contractors might be used to, so hopefully it's not so burdensome that we will discourage anyone interested in bidding on the work."

The partial projects would still see $425,000 in money from the Federal Rail Commission. The Port would need to match at least 25% of the funds. The last option would be to only put in the rail crossings. Jacoby said it could be late winter or spring before the project goes to bid.
