The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is asking you to donate blood.
A blood drive will be held on December 30th at Secrest Auditorium in Zanesville from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization has teamed up with area businesses to help entice the public to come out and will be giving away one pound bags of coffee from Dunkin Donuts and $10.00 gift cards from Walmart.
"Right now our blood donations are down because of the holiday, because of the Christmas season and it's truly the gift of life. I mean you can give blood, it doesn't cost you anything but an hour of your time," said Blood Donor Representative Rick Dayton.
He says central Ohio Red Cross, who covers 27 counties, needs to collect at least 650 units of blood a day. He says blood donations don't just help trauma patients, but also burn victims and those diagnosed with cancer.
The city employees are being encouraged to help out.
"We're going to work especially hard on city employees, we're kind of in a little competition with the county employees and we're going to see who can come up with the most donors for this drive," said Fire Chief Dave Lacy.
"I want to challenge the county because I think the city employees will come through and beat the county," said Mayor Butch Zwelling.
More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
