Big Tree Contest

It's time to find the biggest tree in Muskingum County...

The Annual Big Tree Contest, sponsored through the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District, is open to the public. Agriculture and Wildlife Specialist Ryan Fink says this contest is a way to get residents in Muskingum County interested in some of their property and score the big trees in the county. Fink gives a hint as to where you may find larger trees.

"They tend to be located out of the human influence, steeper ravines, or some of your bottom ground along the rivers and streams where they are protected by the elements as well," said Ryan Fink.

The contest is simple. If you have a large tree on your property, or a property you know of, you can nominate that tree up until April 1st when the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District has their deadline. Fink says each tree is scored using the scoring system through the ODNR Division of Forestry. When scoring, they take into consideration the height, crown spread, and diameter of the trunk.

"It gets people interested in the outdoors and also the benefits of trees and also people want to know how their tree scores against other trees in the county," said Fink.

The Big Tree Contest is completely free, and the top 10 trees in the county go on to compete at the state level. For more information, you can call the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District at (740) 454-2027.
