Tornado Siren Testing

Spring has finally arrived and with the warmer weather comes the increase chance of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

This is spring severe weather awareness week and along with it begins the testing of tornado sirens throughout the State of Ohio. Weather permitting Wednesday, March 23 the sirens will sound at 9:50a.m. The test will then happen every Wednesday at Noon until November.

"It's important to let the people know the sirens are out there. For us to make sure that they are working and of course the fact that people hear the sirens," said Emergency Management Agency's Bo Keck. "They understand what they are and in severe weather they are supposed to take cover if they hear one of those sirens."

A tornado that hit Crooksville last September also highlights a potential problem. When Perry County sounded their siren bordering Roseville's siren never went off. New equipment bought with grant money solves that problem.

"Any of our cities in Muskingum County that border another county will also have the other counties equipment in them. For instance if Licking County set their sirens National Trails siren will go off with either Licking or Muskingum," explained Keck.

Currently the county has 40 sirens. Two new ones can be found near the Sunrise Bowl on the East Pike and on East King Street in South Zanesville.

Later this year additional sirens will be placed in Trinway and the Stringtown areas.

To help educate the people of Southeastern Ohio on severe weather the EMA along with the National Weather Service a SkyWarn Training session on April 18th at 6:30. The training is free and those interested can register by calling the EMA  at (740) 453-1655 or by e-mail at klhoward@muskingumcounty.org
