Inspired to Give Back

Between applying for college, studying for classes and participating in both sports and clubs a Bishop Rosecrans High School senior finds time to give back.

Monica Westerheide's willingness to give back has made her the Muskingum Family Y's Bright Future Award recipient. She found out she won the award during a community youth foundation meeting, where they were voting on another scholarship.

"I was really excited," said Westerheide. "I remember seeing the billboards up all over Zanesville. It was such an honor to receive a great award. I can't believe it. It's just now hitting me."

Westerheide keeps busy volunteering with the Community Youth Foundation, is the President of the school's Key Club, organizes blood drives at RHS for the Red Cross and is a three sport athlete.

"It's really taught me time management. It's sometimes hard to balance everything together," said Westerheide. "I prioritize my time whether it's between academics or sports. I just use my time wisely."

This award winner plans on continuing her volunteer work after high school and while is undecided in a major said she's leaning towards doing communication work for non profit agencies. Westerheide's the second Rosecrans student to win the "Bright Future's Award". In 2010, Oliva Durant won the honor for her service work.
