Online videos may be the tool you need to use to quit smoking.
The Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department is teaming up with the Ohio Department of Health's "Healthy Ohio" program, for a multi-media campaign to help Ohioans stop smoking. The campaign. Called 'Dear Me Nobody Can Make Me Quit But Me', features online videos of real smokers writing letters to themselves about their own tobacco addiction and struggle to quit.
“It's a way for a person to put down on paper, so that you think better and commit better, to stop smoking.” says ZMCHD Medical Director, Vicki Whitacre.
The website also allows visitors to write their own letter, and watch more in-depth videos. According to Dr. Whitacre, smoking is responsible for 85-95% of all lung cancer cases. It also severely decreases the smokers ability to taste and smell. There are also some risks that you may not be aware of.
“People who are long term smokers are running around with chronic, long term carbon monoxide poisoning,” she says, “For somebody that may be carrying a baby, they get actual brain damage from the carbon monoxide levels in the mothers.”
Dr. Whitacre encourages those looking to stop smoking to think about what triggers them to light up, and find something else to do instead. She also advises those trying to quit to seek help or call the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
