There are millions of stray dogs and cats around the U.S. and one local animal rescue group is helping to place these four-legged friends into loving homes.
Four Paws Thrift Store and Pet Adoption Center brought several dogs to the Bark for Life event sponsored by the American Cancer Society in Coshocton on Saturday. Vice President Holly Downing said they are a no kill shelter and all of the animals are spayed and neutered and also have their required shots.
"We are all about spaying and neutering so we don't have so many puppies and dogs that might be going into situations where they might be euthanized," she said.
Downing said many people assume the animals have issues because they were given away which isn't true. She said they have a very high success rate with adoptions.
"We take in some dogs from shelters, we take what we call owner surrender dogs, they're given to us by owners who can't keep them anymore for any reason, and then we try to find the best homes for them," she said.
She adds that they are always looking for extra help, "we're all volunteers, nobody gets paid, we need dog walkers, we need anybody to come and help us play with kittens, play with puppies, and just help us out."
