Donations are Needed

Local volunteers and goods donations are needed to help the victims of the Joplin, Missouri disaster.

A three mile wide tornado struck the city last Sunday, killing more than 130 people, destroying countless buildings, and leaving many people homeless.

Friday volunteers gathered at the Pollock Apartments, located on 5th and Market Street in Zanesville to gather items to send to Missouri. Items are still being accepted, but volunteer Dave Joseph says they need more hands to help load up trucks.

"We need people to come down and help us." said Joseph. "If somebody out there wants to pay back a little bit, have them come down and stay here and help a little bit. We're looking for high school kids who can do it, if anybody wants to help. If you can't make a donation of money or goods come down and be a volunteer. "

The group is also asking for donations ranging from non-perishable food items to personal hygiene items. Donations can be dropped off Monday, May 30th through Wednesday, June 1st at the Pollock Apartments from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m..

"This Memorial Day weekend start thinking about those people who can't have cookout or go to ball games." he said.

Joseph is asking for people to think of items such as diapers and pet food, because people often forget about displaced children and pets. He says one reason he is doing this is because he knows that if Zanesville was in need, people would help.

"It looks like an atom bomb exploded, there's nothing left." he said "I cant even imagine what that would feel like, so we are going to help them because they need help."

The Victory Church in Missouri is sending up a semi truck late next week to take all the donated items directly to the victims in Joplin. If you would like to help load the trucks you can call 740-297-5422.
