The true meaning behind tomorrow's holiday is often over shadowed by shopping, cookouts and other activites.
But, for Navy Veteran, Larry Hekins, and the three generations in his family who served, the day is not easily forgotten.
Hekins said, "I'm proud to have served, proud to be an American, and I hope that all the people, again, celebrate Memorial day by thanking a vet. "
Taking the time to remember families like the Hekins is just what, local resident, Julie Endly believes Memorial Day is all about.
"Memorial Day, to me, means family and also prayers to those overseas and those that have lost their lives keeping us free everyday," said Endly. "It's because of them that we get to spend this day together and this weekend together with our families."
Endly is taking the time this holiday weekend to remind her kids the day isn't just about wearing red, white and blue. It's what those colors represent.
