Easy to Donate

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood.

During the summer season the number of those donating drops and has already caused two blood types to drop to critical levels including O Negative and B negative. To draw attention to the need for donations, June 14th is marked as World Blood Donor Day. It's a chance for all to recognize that blood is essential to health care across the globe.

"No one can manufacture it," said Muskingum County Red Cross Executive Director Marlene Henderson. "There's no synthetic that can replace human blood and it's really really important especially in the summer with accidents."

Anyone who donates can save up to three lives in just an hour of sitting down and rolling up your sleeve.

"There's really nothing to be nervous about. The initial stick is not that difficult," explained Henderson. "There's a few things you should think about. Eat before you come, cut out the ice tea because it drops your iron level and just make sure you're very well hydrated and have food in your system and you should be just fine."

This week the Red Cross is giving you a chance to donate. A blood drive will be held Friday at the Chapter House on 7th Street from 10am-4pm. A $10 Kroger card will be given to everyone that donates, there's also a chance to sign up to win gas for a year along with other items. Another blood drive will be held on June 24th that also runs from 10am-4pm.
