It's Christmas in July for one Zanesville organization.
Thinking ahead to the Christmas holiday, Operation Spirit celebrated the 4th of July by raising money for Christmas care packages for troops overseas. The group held a drive-thru chicken dinner fundraiser. Director, Melodie Pittman aimed to sell more than 200 chicken dinners which would raise about $1,800.
"The rain has kind of kept the drive-thrus away but we'll go, if we have to go stand on the corner we'll do it," said Pittman
Last year Operation Spirit shipped about 400 care packages in the form of Christmas stockings. The stockings included necessities like tooth brushes, tooth paste, razors and other donated items. Pittman said, she hopes to ship just as much if not more this year but needs the support of the community.
"Because it's the right thing to do and it's the just thing to do," said Pittman. "And while we are out having picnics for the 4th of July you know, we have our families and friends, they don't."
Operation spirit will host another chicken dinner in October. To learn more about operation spirit you can visit their web site at operationspiritinc.com
