The community mourns the loss of an incoming Zanesville High School freshman.
School Officials say 14 year-old Grant Hickman died early Saturday morning at a home on Taylor street. The teen is suspected to have died of alcohol use but Zanesville Police have not yet released details. Zanesville High School Principle Mark Ulbrich said a candle light vigil was held by students Saturday night to remember grant.
"This is a very, very difficult lesson, a lesson we hope our students never have to encounter again but it does speak to the real dangers of being in activities like this," said Ulbrich. "You never know what's really going to happen."
Hickman was described by Zanesville High School Head Football Coach Chad Grandstaff as a dedicated player, explaining that voluntary practice for incoming freshman began in February and Hickman never missed a day. Grandstaff said Monday morning the school will talk with the football team and then with the junior high team later on in the day.
"I think the biggest thing is just to listen and share things with them," said Grandstaff. "We are going to talk about it, we're not going to hide from it, we're not going to runaway from it. "
The school is extending their condolences to the Hickman family. Counselors and support agencies are available for class-mates. We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.
