Search Efforts Resume in River, Name Released

Archer 1

Search crews continue their search efforts in the Muskingum River for the second day after a man who had been tubing with a group of friends went missing Saturday afternoon.

Officials say 41-year-old Troy Hindel of Frazeysburg was holding onto a raft in the river with a group of friends when the person closest to him saw him go under twice, not resurfacing the second time. Witnesses tell fire officials they heard the group yell for help when Hindel went under, who authorities said is believed to have drowned. The search resumed Sunday morning with more than 40 search and rescue personnel and assistance of K-9 units.

"So far we've searched several different areas where the dogs have made, what is called made hits on, with no avail, " said Dresden Fire Chief Carl Archer. "And we are continuing to do that plus continuing to have several divers in at different locations."

Due to Saturday night's storms dumping about 3.5 inches of rain, search efforts have become more difficult. Search boats, divers, and K9 units continued until dark searching as far as Ellis Dam, covering approximately six miles of the river. Officials said crews will most likely resume searching Monday if Hindel's body has not been found.

"We will continue tomorrow, probably starting tomorrow we will be patrolling the river," said Archer. "I mean we've almost exhausted all of our search areas in the river where we think the victim may have gone down. But we will continue for several days or until the victim is located."

Crews on scene Sunday included Dresden Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by Falls Township Fire Department, the Buckeye Search and Rescue Unit, Mid-West K-9 Search Unit, along with divers from the Walhonding Fire Department. We'll bring you the latest as it becomes available.
